Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined differently. It is a total inability to maintain/achieve an erection, or an occasional ability to acquire it, or only brief (short) erections are attained. The vague description of the problem makes it hard to estimate the total number of people who suffer from the ED. However, the number of people enduring erectile dysfunction is growing rapidly. The NAMCS (National Ambulatory Medical Care Surrvey) estimates that 15 million to 30 million, depending on the definition, males are already experiencing erectile problems. There are increasing numbers of people who are seeking help from physicians. There are various forms of treatment available to deal with erectile concerns.

The generally known cause for male impotency is age. However, age is not the prime cause. The derivates of age such as diseases, impaired nerves and injuries are what cause penile dysfunctions. Age accounts only for 15% to 25% of the cases of ED. Erection dysfunction is nowadays treatable. The age factor can thus be reduced to even a minor percentage. The specialist concerned with ED is usually the urologist (specialized in Urinary issues). They have successfully treated several cases of ED with the aid of pills such as Cialis, Viagra and Levitra.

Mechanism of an Erection

Understanding the Penis

The male organ (penis) works in a defined system. The penis in constituted of two chambers. One is called the Corpora Cavernosa and the other one is the spongy tissues. The former determines the length of the organ which is enclosed by a membrane (Tunica Albuginea) and the latter is constituted with fibrous tissues, muscles, space veins and arteries. The channel used to urinate or to ejaculate is called the Urethra, it is found in the Corpora Cavernosa.

Understanding an erection

An erection requires a stimulus. The stimulation needs to be either sensed (sensed stimulation is indirectly mental) or mental. From the impulse, the brain will indicate the muscles of the penis to relax. This will permit blood to flow into the penis and thus fill the empty spaces. The blood will then create a pressure which will cause the penis (Corpora Cavernosa) to expand. The membrane (Tunica Albuginea) will assist to trap blood within the Corpora Cavernosa, and this will sustain the erection. Once the muscle starts to contract, the blood inflow will stop and the erection will be reversed. The blood will flow out of the penis turning the penis into a normal state.

General Hindrance to proper erections

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a number of related factors. It is not necessary that only one factor is causing ED. The most known cause is damaged arteries, nerves, tissues and muscles. These side-effects are often developed from diseases (diabetes, kidney, multiple sclerosis, vascular disease and neurologic disease). Diseases account for approximately ¾ of the erectile dysfunction cases. Approximately ¼ to ½ of men with diabetes suffer from ED.

Other Causes of Erectile dysfunction

The hectic and unhealthy lifestyle does often contribute to disease and thereby erectile dysfunction. Some common causes of ED are:

  • Smoking
  • Lack of exercise
  • Overweight
  • Surgery –e.g. prostate surgery for cancer
  • Injuries – Mainly affecting nerves and arteries of the penis.
  • Medicine – Antidepressants, blood pressure, ulcer drugs (cimetidine)
  • Psychological factors – Stress, depression, fear, anxiety, Lack of confidence (low self-esteem) – Above 10 percent of ED problems are mental.
  • Hormonal abnormalities – Lack of testosterone

Summary

Erection dysfunction is a serious problem. It can be treated. An erection does require some basic factors (rather a sequence of factors) to be present. The absence of any of these indispensable elements can lead to erectile dysfunction. It is important that none of the necessary steps are interrupted in the formation of a sustained erection. Moreover, erectile dysfunction remains curable at any age and from most causes.
